Description

Pharmacists are key primary healthcare providers and are well placed to contribute to improved access to immunisation especially to those most at risk of complications from vaccine-preventable disease through the provision of pharmacist administered immunisation service. It represents an expanded scope of opportunity for pharmacists to personally make a rewarding contribution to public health outcomes and patient healthcare.

As at 10 May 2016 it was legislated that pharmacists could immunise in Victoria in accordance with specific legislations and guidelines. Currently there are approximately 20% of pharmacies in Victoria registered to provide pharmacist administered immunisation services, the percentage of which is lower in regional and rural Victoria.

This session is a collaboration between PSA and PHN Western Victoria that aims to support pharmacists, pharmacy staff and pharmacies interested in delivering a pharmacist administered immunisation service with an insight into the legislations and guidelines that govern this service and the practical considerations around implementation and promotion. Pharmacists who are currently delivering this service will benefit from the promotional discussions that can help improve awareness and uptake of the service. The pharmacy team overall will find value in consolidating their understanding of effective cold chain management.

Pharmacists and all pharmacy staff are welcome to attend. All attendees will receive a pertussis and registration resource kit.

Learning objectives:

  • Describe the value of a pharmacist administered vaccination service.
  • Discuss the legislations and guidelines by which pharmacist immunisers and pharmacies must comply with to provide a pharmacist administered vaccination service in Victoria.
  • Describe the practical considerations of implementing a pharmacist administered vaccination service and demonstrate ways in which pharmacists and the pharmacy team can promote this service in the pharmacy.
  • Recognise the principles and importance of cold chain management and implement processes that are required for effective cold chain management.
